about
Sue Milford is a long time Exeter resident, but originally came to the city as an evacuee during the Second World War. She told Theatre Alibi the story of how she arrived, only to find that she was last off the bus, and there was no-one to take her in. Luckily, an older couple, Gert and Arthur, who hadn't intended to take an evacuee, took pity on her. She went to stay with them, and despite initially being daunted by their westcountry accents, they formed a life long bond. They became like family, and she returned to Exeter after the war. She got married in Emmanuel Hall, which is now Theatre Alibi's home. She lives in Exeter still.
If you'd like to here Sue tell some of her own story, you can hear her talking about it here:

lyrics
Take Me Home
I was last off the bus, at the end of the line
Away, they've sent me away
There was no-one to take me, no gaze met mine
Oh, oh, take me home
From Lambeth streets, we went on a train
Away from the bombs, from my own mother's arms
From the city we came to another life
With labelled suitcases and tired eyes
I was standing alone, when I heard them call
They told me, a seed must bloom where it falls
They chose me, and took me home, down to Prospect Place
They wiped all the dirt and the tears from my face
Home is not a piece of ground
Drawn on maps and bombers' charts
Home is just the friends I've found
With strange voices and open hearts
And then I met Den, and he took me home
We wed in Emmanuel Hall, now 70 years ago
Life is a circle, it draws you around
And I've always come back to the love that here I found
