about
The vicar of St Thomas invited those who were experiencing loss during lockdown - whether loss of a loved one, a job, or simply the freedom to hug others close - to tie ribbons to the church railings. Many, many people made this special memorial gesture. It was very moving to see all the ribbons hanging there, and imagine the stories behind each one.
lyrics
Ribbons
When I remember you, I like to think of you
In 1952, with a ribbon in your hair
Coming down from St Thomas Fairfield
We'd had a party, for sure we'd had a party there
But when the waters rise
We cannot stop the tide
I will hang ribbons for you, every colour,
To dance in the wind
To stand bright against our bleakest hour
Because I could not hold your hand
Ribbons to remember
Until I can smile again
The years fall away, and I am back again
On some sweet summers day, down by the Pleasure Ground
When I think of you, I don't like to think of heartbreak,
Of dark days, but just of the joy we found
We watched the cricket ball spin
The future came tumbling in
Because I could not hold your hand
I hold these memories inside my head
The world moves strangely, I don't understand
So I tie ribbons for you, ribbons instead
60 ribbons, 60 ribbons, 60 stories,
60 reasons to recall
When you take away the dust and the glory,
We have only ribbons, to remember it all
Our memories set free
Become a tapestry
