This song was inspired by the Ogham stones, in particular the Roborough Down stone. Ogham is an Irish runic alphabet, and most Ogham stones are found in Ireland; but the spread of stones with Ogham inscriptions through Wales and into the Westcountry is testament to ancient migration routes. The Roborough stone is special because it commemorates two people. The first inscription, in Ogham, is the name "Enabarras", whereas the second much longer inscription is in Latin, and appears to commemorate his son, saying, "Of Dobunnus the smith, son of Enabarras". It has been suggested that Enabarras was likely a first generation Irish immigrant, while his son, having grown up here, no longer considered Irish to be his first language. The movement of peoples is as old as the stones, and the words 'wind rush' are not used accidentally.
lyrics
Where I stand, I mark two lives, two sets of hands
In two tongues, a line for a father, a line for his son
A father who travelled far
A son born of this land
The wind rushes through their lives
And leaves them where I stand
For work he came, or for love, or for hunger, or for loss, or for gain
And his son made old worlds new, and made two worlds one
A modern tale, through our heavy-built borders they are moving still
Yet all the same, it's for 2000 thousand years I've remembered their names
Always the same, the only constant in life is change
For life is an old song, an old song that must be sung
Telling the old tune, of a father and his son

John Drumbo French from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band worked with Thompson on two albums along with Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser.
Those two French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson albums led me to this.
Also, Richard Thompson taught Hugh Cornwell (of The Stranglers) how to play the bass guitar in a band when they were both at the same school (Emil and The Detectives?).
With a career spanning 50 years and playing with two of my heroes (French and Cornwell) Thompson has produced a fascinating EP. yellowcakeuf6
