This song was inspired by Graham Swift's book Waterland. He talks of the people of the fens, "fishermen, fowlers and reed-cutters who made their sodden homes in those stubborn swamps", but who began to be turned off the land in the 17th century, as rich investors decided to drain the area for their own profit. The investors started bringing in Dutch drainers to complete the project; but local opposition appears to have led to several mysterious Dutch deaths. In our song, a familiar spirit of the Fens, the willow-the-wisp, explains about the great levelling properties of water...
