The Nailmaker's Strike pt.I & pt.II - trad. arr. Henry / Martin - We adapted this song from the version found in Roy Palmer's excellent collection of industrial songs, Poverty Knock. The song concerns a protest march which took place during a strike of Bromsgrove nailmakers in 1862. They marched from Halesowen to Bromsgrove (pulling a ton of coal donated by a wellwisher), to protest against poor wages and working conditions. Pt.I follows the tune with it's rhythmic variations as it is found in the book. Pt. II is a modern adaptation, taking the lyrics and tune of the original song and adding a chorus inspired by a modern protest song, Declaration of Rights by the Abyssinians.
